What kind of disaster could cause a cold (IE: creating an ice age rather than deserts) apocalypse on Earth...?
...and leave humanity still standing?
Of course, there's nuclear winter, but people will less than likely survive that. If I am wrong, let me know. if not, what kind of disaster (ecological, nuclear, whatever) could leave humanity standing, but turn the globe into a winter wasteland? And what conditions would need to be met to cause it?
If you can't think of anything, then at least tell me what kinds of cold-causing disasters you can think up.

Any disaster that generates a large amount of dust and debris that blocks out the sun can result in a "nuclear winter". The most likely causes would be an asteroid or comet collision with the earth or a super volcano eruption, like the super volcano that makes up Yellowstone Valley. There is also a theory that the rapid melting of ice in the northern hemisphere will result in a decrease in salination of waters in the north Atlantic, which will disrupt the thermohaline circulation that brings warm waters to that part of the ocean.
Basically, the waters that exist in the north Atlantic are evaporated by high winds, resulting in an excess in salinity in those waters. This increases the water's density, causing it to sink to the bottom of the ocean. As it reaches deep undersea trenches, the water continues to sink to lower depths and the trenches get deeper as they make their way to the equator. This results in warm water being driven from the equator back up to the north Atlantic on a kind of global conveyor belt through the seas.
If the melting ice causes a decrease in salinity of north Atlantic waters, the theory is that the water will not sink with as much force - if at all - which will slow down and eventually stop the thermohaline flow. This would then cause extreme cooling in the north Atlantic and a sort of mini ice age in that region would result.
