Jimmy Page or David Gilmour or Peter Townshend who is the guitar king out of these?
Gilmour.
Very few guitarists, in my opinion, are able to coax that much emotion out of a guitar. The only one I can think of off the top of my head who comes close is Mark Knopfler.
Page plays some really great riffs--I am especially fond of "Black Dog", where he gets so sloppy he's completely off time. But he doesn't really play in a soulful manner.
And I love Townshend. He's written some amazing music, and I actually love his solo work. Again, however, listening to his guitar playing is not a lesson in emotion.
Gilmour wins, hands down. Listen to this, and you'll see what I mean. I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but really listen to it, to the strength of the emotion, and you'll see what I mean:
You know, one thing I have always wanted to see is some of the best guitarists still living performing one another's most famous solos. For example, I would love to hear the more "soulful" players' music played by the guitarists who specialize in fast, pounding riffs, and vice versa. I would love to see what Page could do with the solos in "Comfortably Numb," and then what someone like Knofpler could do with a solo by someone like Eddie Van Halen. All of them are great at their chosen craft, but I don't think they could play one another's music very well, since I think it comes from some sort of well of emotion deep inside them. I have no doubt they can all place their fingers correctly, and match the time, etc., but I just don't think any of them could pull off playing someone elses music, since it's all so personal to the player.
