What is the best first Stephen King novel to read for someone who isn't into gore?
My wife, can you believe it, has never read a single Stephen King book. I'd like to introduce her to one of the greats, but there are so many to choose from. She's not really into gore, so that certainly narrows it down a bit and I'd like to give a good first impression. Any recommendations?
There is actually very little gore in the vast majority of Stephen King novels -- unlike the movies, which tend to play it up because the relationship dynamics, guilt, suspense, and psychological horror are so difficult to mimic in film.
I strongly suggest she read DOLORES CLAIRBORNE first. It's a masterful novel, with a strong female main character, a fascinating framework to tell the story, and centers on issues vital to women.
